BKD Speedpaint started as an idea and a “what if?” by 2 brothers in their teens after meeting a great pin striper at a sidecar rally in Maine in the 1990’s. Bill and Kevin were both into art and fine model making and this was a task that could marry the love of art with the passion for motorcycles.
They started practicing on all of the helmets around the house and then when they ran out, started convincing friends to let them experiment. This led to work around the Ottawa area and eventually setting up booths at the Toronto International Motorcycle show. Bill and Kevin constantly strived to improve the product as well as the diversity of styles they could offer… BKD Speedpaint started getting heavily involved in the Canadian Roadracing Scene in 2000, working with Jeff Williams, Mike Taylor and a young up and comer named Jordan Szoke. To this day, BKD Speedpaint is still working with Jordan to define his helmet look.
BKD Speedpaint has worked with Shoei to produce a Jordan Szoke replica and has also been instrumental in working with other racers to define their brand.
BKD now focuses on race car and motorcycle helmet painting, using technology and computer plotting to bring a whole new level of accuracy to logo painting and design. Kevin’s background in design art allows him to create detailed paint masks for logo and design integration as well as patterning that wasn’t conceivable when we started painting 20 years ago.
BKD Speedpaint is now run by Kevin, taking the reigns to constantly create new and evolved designs for both returning and new clients.

If you can imagine it, we can paint it! (well almost) Our turn-around time is about 5-8 weeks from the start of work on the helmet depending on the work being done to the helmet as well as backlog/workload. BKD strongly recommends that you plan on using a new, white helmet. We will NOT paint on a helmet that has been involved in a collision. Note the turn around is from the start on site, not the first draft render via email.
if you have some ideas on patterns or styles, gather them up and get in touch! I wont copy a design, where is the originality in that, but we can come up with a design that pulls a lot of elements together in a unique way.
This is really important! Starting fresh is the best way to go. If you are from outside of Canada, please buy one from a Canadian online retailer and have it sent here. There are complications and additional costs to accept international inbound helmets so ideally it needs to start life in Canada. I can provide lots of different contacts for Bell, Arai, and Shoei helmets to get you the best prices in Canada.
I'll work with you to get the final design sorted and then get started after the agreed cost. At this point, a deposit is required (paypal is good for out of towners) and I'll give an ETA for completion and delivery.
Usually about 5 weeks after starting your custom helmet art will be finished and ready for reassembly and delivery. I'll provide a shipping quote and a final invoice and then we can get your lid back to you, ready for racing.

We worked with Ben to come up with some fantastic Tim Hortons lids. Ben is a commited all round racer and will continue racing in CSBK in 2019.

BKD Speepaint has worked with Jordan since 1999, painting all of his Roadracing Lids since then. Jordans designs have evolved over the years but they are always eye catchers!
If you want computer renderings and illustration services fees will be added and due at the time of start of the paintwork. All prices are in CANADIAN dollars. The base price includes 3 to 4 airbrushed layers and general labeling (helmet brand) The average cost of a complete BKD original is between $1400 and $2000 plus return shipping.
